Dynamic Phase Transitions and Collective Modes in Cell Spreading

Cell motility is caused by an active polymer gel enclosed by a bilayer membrane relaying extracellular signals and forces. Actual movements are created by an interplay of polymerization and depolymerization of actin fibers and activity of the molecular motors myosin leading to contraction of the actin gel. The spreading of mouse embryonic fibroblasts on 2-dimensional substrates proceeds in sequential phases. Given this observation, we have proposed a model introducing hierarchical interactions within and between protein modules allowing a coarse grained description of motility. I will discuss elements of this conceptual framework. Within the phases of spreading we find the appearance of universal modes of movement. I will present spatio-temporal correlation functions revealing the underlying stochastic processes of the cell.
