Complex self-organized dynamics in oscillator networks and methods of its control

Abstract:
The mathematical simplicity of phase oscillators makes their use an attractive framework in which to study the emergence of complex dynamics in nonlinear systems. We analyze two mechanisms for control of desynchronization and turbulence in systems of phase oscillators. The first is global feedback as a way of suppressing high dimensional chaos in an oscillator network. The second is random external forcing as a method to induce order in a globally coupled system undergoing a desynchronization transition. Both these control methods have the power to drive an otherwise disordered system towards homogeneous oscillations. In both cases we pay attention to the complex dynamics that can be observed along this transition.
