Asymptotic approaches to cardiac excitation models

Abstract:
Detailed models of cardiac excitation are complicated and involve dozens of parameters. Small parameters make the equations stiff and cause considerable difficulties for numerical simulations. Normally, small parameters should be used for asymptotic approaches, however this did not really happen to cardiac excitation equations until recently. A serious reason for that is a non-standard asymptotic structure of cardiac equations, intricately related with the electrophysiology of excitability. I will present a non-standard asymptotic approach to cardiac equations, exploiting rather than ignoring their special features. This approach leads to a specific type of simplified models, alternative to the classical "FitzHugh-Nagumo" type models. I will describe recent results obtained with the new simplified models, related to non-stationary processes of excitation, such as initiation and termination of excitation waves.
