Fifth International Symposium
Engineering of Chemical Complexity
Berlin, May 25-27, 2008

Program and Organization: G. Ertl, A. S. Mikhailov

The aim of this meeting is to review current perspectives for design, manipulation and efficient control of self-organizing complex chemical systems, ranging from biotechnology and reactive nanostructures to macroscopic pattern formation in chemical reactors. Both experimental studies of such phenomena and their mathematical modeling will be discussed. Possible technological applications of self-organization phenomena shall be considered.

Manipulating scroll rings by an external electric current

Abstract:
Scroll rings are three-dimensional wave structures in excitable media whose filaments form closed loops. Such filaments are subject to instabilities which cause the scroll ring to expand or contract intrinsically depending on the excitability of the medium. Even though the length of the filament changes due to expansion or contraction, the position and orientation of the scroll ring are approximately stationary, i.e. the filament neither drifts nor rotates.
We present a study of the dynamics of a scroll ring in a Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction subject to a constant electric current. This structure was found to reorient with respect to the direction of the applied external electric current. Two stationary orientations were found and their orientational stability determined..
At a stable stationary orientation in absence of an external current, the scroll rings of the BZ reaction contract intrinsically and eventually self-annihilate. For low values of the external electric current density, the scroll rings still contracted, while for higher current densities the rings expanded. This current-dependent behaviour was used to manipulate the size and life-time of scroll rings.
The experimental observations were reproduced to a good agreement by accompanying numerical simulations.
