The aim of this meeting is to review current perspectives for design, manipulation and efficient control of self-organizing complex chemical systems, ranging from biotechnology and reactive nanostructures to macroscopic pattern formation in chemical reactors. Both experimental studies of such phenomena and their mathematical modeling will be discussed. Possible technological applications of self-organization phenomena shall be considered.

Several years ago, we found an unusual behavior of two-dimensional monomolecular layer of chiral liquid crystals spread on glycerol sub-phase that the liquid crystal director undergoes a spontaneous and continued macroscopic rotation when the monolayer is subjected to the gradient of chemical potential of water. A naive interpretation of this phenomenon is that the chiral molecule behaves like a propeller placed in the stream of water molecule, and the angular momentum at the molecular level is transferred to the macroscopic director rotation by a mechanism which we do not understand yet. This picture is consistent with all the observations we made, and stimulated other groups to carry out theoretical study mostly about the further macroscopic consequences of the collective molecular rotation. Recently, by changing the molecular species to be transferred across the monolayer, we found a striking dependence of the collective rotation, in terms of both rotational direction and speed, on the type of molecules transferred instead of water. This presentation is to give a report on our on-going experimental and molecular simulation study of the molecular origin of the collective molecular motor, inspired by the chemical dependence. Still very much preliminary, the results addresses a very fundamental issue about the proper expression of molecular chirality in this particular phenomenon.
